Speeding up Sam Mayer’s path to the NASCAR Cup Series is a huge mistake

Sam Mayer led the final 30 laps and stretched his margin of victory to 4.433 seconds over his champion teammate Brett Moffitt and followed it up with a dominant performance in the ARCA Menards Series race. He definitely possesses high-quality skill and talent and is extremely patient. Remember he’s only 17 years old.

His age is significant because he isn’t old enough to compete on the speedways and super speedways yet. Drivers have to be eighteen and have been granted approval by NASCAR to compete in races at tracks of that length.

Hendrick Motorsports is going to ruin his prospective stock for the NASCAR Cup Series. JR Motorsports previously announced that Mayer will drive part-time for the team in 2021 then full-time in 2022. I am expecting that he will be running in the Xfinity Series which would completely destroy his development. Graduating straight to the Xfinity Series means that he will bypass running a full complement schedule in the ARCA Series and Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.

JR motorsports has filled in one entry in the Truck Series part time for 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie Of The Year Cole Custer when he was advancing. So, that could still be a possibility, however, Mayer needs to run one full season in the August series before he is eligible for the truck series.

I am a fan of both William Bowman and Erik Jones but they Suffered equally as much from the lack of experience in the three national tying series. Jones might land on his feet and all indications are that he will go to Hendrick Motorsports. However, he was already booted out of Joe Gibbs Racing; And has the highest potential to be a repeat of Daniel Suarez. Bowman is safe for now at Hendrick but with man waiting in the wings, he will most likely threaten Byron’s or Gragson’s seat.

Drivers are back in action September 26 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Tune in at 7:00 PM live on Fox Sports 1 and Performance Racing Network. Stay tuned for my prediction for the race winner and more news about this series.
