34-year-old Kyle Busch won his 5th race of 2019 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It was the 40th of this decade and 56 career victory. He leads all drivers in wins in this decade and is 9th all-time in career victories, surpassing NASCAR Hall Of Fame inductee Rusty Wallace.
NASCAR will never see success close to Busch’s again.
Because the team Busch drives for Joe Gibbs Racing won 19 of 36 races, Toyota Racing has won the manufacturers championship and Coach Gibbs won Toyota’s third manufacturer championship in 5 years.
Gibbs lost his son JD on January 11. Denny won his second Daytona 500 and five more races while Martin Truex Jr. win 6 races. It was surely a poignant moment for Gibbs when he was interviewed post-race after Busch won it all.
The Rookie of The Year in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is Daniel Hemric. Hemric finished twelfth in the Ford EcoBoost 300, gaining 15 points on Ryan Preece, to finish 5 points ahead of him.
Overall, I’d give the season the grade of 70%. The aero package royally killed racing at all tracks except Super Speedways.
